The Federal Skilled Worker Category (FSWC) allows those who have at least one year of skilled work experience to apply for permanent residence in Canada, provided that they obtain sufficient points under the point score system. Under the Federal Skilled Workers program 67 points is the PassMark. A total of 100 points are available and the pass mark is currently set at 67. The factors measured under the point system are:

1. Education (25 points)
2. Language Skills (English and French) (28 points)
3. Work Experience (15 points)
4. Age (12 points)
5. Arranged Employment (10 points)
6. Adaptability (10 points)

The current FSWC program operates on a 100-point system. Successful applicants must score 67 or more points, which are allocated for a number of factors such as education, work experience, language ability, age, and ‘adaptability’.

Understands the main points and important details of a conversation and can write routine business correspondence; able to participate in small group discussions and express opinions and reservations about a topic.

Understands technical conversations and reading material in their line of work; asks questions, analyzes and compares information in order to make decisions.

Participates in business meetings and debates; understands a broad range of general and abstract topics; writes formal and informal notes and summary documents.

Points will be awarded based on an assessment of educational credentials by a designated organization, indicating the foreign educational credential’s equivalent in Canada.

In order to receive points for arranged employment, applicants will need to have a LMIA, plus a valid job offer. In some cases, applicants will be LMIA exempted and will only require a valid job offer.

Skilled Worker applicants also need to show that they have sufficient funds to settle in Canada once they arrive and during the period it will take to find a home and employment. The amount required depends on the total family size. This requirement does not apply to those who are working in Canada or have arranged employment.

• Federal Skilled Trades Program

You do not need to show that you have enough money to support yourself and your family if

• you are applying under the Canadian Experience Class or
• you’re authorized to work in Canada and you have a valid job offer, even if you apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Program or the Federal Skilled Trades Program

The amount of money you need to support your family depends on the size of your family. To calculate the size of your family you must include

• yourself
• your spouse or partner
• your dependent children and
• your spouse’s dependent children

Include your spouse or dependent children even if they are

• permanent residents or Canadian citizens
• not coming to Canada with you
